Allergic, cardiac, cirrhotic, nephrotic, and nephritic edema states are discussed below. Expanded discussions of nephrotic and nephritic edema may be found, with links to recent articles reviewing the other types of edema.
Cirrhotic Edema

In patients with cirrhosis, edema may develop as a consequence of decreased hepatic protein synthesis. Hypoalbumenemia leads to decreased plasma oncotic pressure, decreased effective renal perfusion, and tubular salt and water reabsorption. Low oncotic pressure leads to decreased return of interstitial fluid, and edema, ascites, and anasarca may develop. |
